Community Picnic and Open House
Sunday, August 28, 2022 • 1 Elul 5782
12:00 PM - 3:00 PMThis is an all-community picnic! Come schmooze with Ner Shalom members and our leadership team, register your kids for Religious School, and become members if you aren't already! The congregational BoD will provide the hot dogs and hamburgers and the Religious School board will provide entertainment (and answers to any questions you have about religious school). In order to keep our picnic delicious and diverse, we ask that every family also bring something they'd feel remiss without, and enough of it to share. We recommend if your last name begins with an A-I, please bring drinks If your last name begins with an J-Q please bring sides If your last name begins with a R-Z please bring desserts. Thank you!

Wednesday, Aug 31st 10:30a to 11:30a
We will meet on August 31 at 10 AM on Zoom to discuss this month's read: Maggie Anton's The Choice. From Goodreads: A powerful love story with a purpose: to challenge Jewish customs concerning women, marriage, and equality. The award-winning author of "Rashi's Daughters," Maggie Anton, has written a wholly transformative novel that takes characters inspired by Chaim Potok and ages them into young adults in Brooklyn in the 1950s, a time of Elvis & Marilyn, communist scares & polio vaccines, Jewish migration & American integration. When Hannah Eisin, a successful journalist, interviews Rabbi Nathan Mandel, a controversial Talmud professor, she persuades him to teach her the mysteries of the text forbidden to women—even though it might cost him his job if discovered. Secret meetings and lively discussions bring the two to the edge of a line that neither dares to cross, as their relationships with each other and Judaism are tested. -
